It is said that you can either become a villain , or as a hero. In the present, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain again for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is formidable, and the plot sticks to the comic-book storyline as well. It also brings back the popular character of the audience, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s hilarious wit is evident. But, Love and Thunder, although it’s a solid standalone film, doesn’t quite compare to the previous Thor installment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however, his solo films have either hit the mark or have completely missed the mark. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a mediocre entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a good start. Yet, any list of the top five MCU films should include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) without a doubt. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika Waititi collaboration brought expectations sky-high ahead of the film’s release.
Gorr (Bale), God who seeks to eliminate all gods strikes New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining forces with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) as well as Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend, who is now Mighty Thor. The film is simple and straight-forward, which is an improvement from the previous Marvel movies. The performances are also good. Hemsworth does a fantastic job as the protagonist who suffers from a midlife crisis, but Bale and Portman are the most notable. As evidence of Bale’s abilities his pre-title credit scene can be seen. Gorr could be the next Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a sense of eerieness to the character , but not much else.
Portman is Mjolnir’s ex-girlfriend who has cancer. Marvel seems keen to hand the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to women characters. I was hoping that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the checklist for representation. But the film does build up a touching backstory for the astrophysicist who can demonstrate her biceps in more than one scene.
Marvel is known for its own flexing too, through the many cameos in this film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast which includes Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles as Thor: Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor in turn. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also portrayed as Hela and as the director for the Asgardian play. Waititi, who since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit, works in his favorite genre again. There are hilarious ideas such as two noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s story Thor breaking his legs, Valkyrie becoming the ambassador for Old Spice…
The central theme is that Thor is looking for his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags work, but they’re also a source of deep emotion. They also reveal the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder does deal with many types of love, ranging from a father-daughter connection to the complex relationship between lovers who have fallen out… There’s an analogy between Gorr losing his respect for the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor being disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These ideas are endless, however…
As usual, there are numerous Easter eggs and even a few references to films such as Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. The camera shows the god of death, Falligar, taken straight out of comics. We see Hemsworth sporting the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. During a fight with Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We can also see a tattoo stating ‘RIP Loki and the costume of the trickster on the back of our Viking. We’re introduced the wicked Necrosword and, given that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to have a mind of their own It’s intriguing to see the weapons shown to be able to control individuals.
This is what we saw with Shang Chi’s 10 rings along with Ms. Marvel’s amazing bangle, and the Ebony blade from the Eternals post-credits scene. The sentence “Gods don’t empower you however, they will utilize you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very relatable. Some of the loss that Valkyrie suffered during war to her most trusted friend and Korg falling for another Kronan man are also included.
The first portion reminds us of all the color we enjoyed in Ragnarok However, the majority of the second part is in the dark world, where everything is in black and white. It is true that the action scenes in monochrome are quite enjoyable.
Hemsworth continues to play Thor and Thor for the foreseeable future, which is an enormous relief for MCU fans who’ve watched the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
